Patent Vitelline duct ( Intestinal contents discharging through umbilicus)
6 day old male presented presented with what the mother described as discharge of faeces from the umbilicus after the cord fell off. Mother quickly rushed to KATH MBU.
WT 3.4kg , PCV 52%
Clinically stable, not pale, anicteric, well hydrated.
RBS 6mmol/L Temp, 37 deg ,
No other congenital abnormality found
Systemic review was normal
Status Localis : bile stained fluid consistent with intestinal contents
Diagnosis : Patent vitelline duct
Surgery : Laparotomy and wedge resection of duct
Intraoperative details :
1. Curved incision made periumbilically and deepend to fascia.
2. Wedge resection of vitelline duct made into the antesenteric border of ileum .
3. Primary closure of ileum done
4. Abdomen closed in layers
Post operative state : satisfactory
